Freezin for a reason

Well we had another frost warning this week. I was more prepared this time.  I was able to cover up everything before it hit.
Is this why they call them veggie  beds?
Last time the hydrangea and tomato got hit, but this time no damage seems to happen.
The cat didn't get frost bitten either :-)

I read in an Extension Office pamphlet, that it is better to use sheets and blankets and covers.  That way, the heat from the ground gets "trapped" in there. If you wrap them around to tight, it doesn't work as well.

In a bigger sense....

One of my favorite sites, Daisy Jane, is doing a series on Growing Organically.  Her viewpoint is on the clothing and fabric aspect of growing organically.

This is one of the videos you can find there.

(I can't believe I just embedded a video!!!)

Once you get your hands in the dirt, it is hard to not care about the Earth.

Interesting Video

This is the trailer to a video that someone on Soule Mama shared in the comments section.
The video is called Back To Eden and can be found on Vimeo.  I not have permission yet to embed the video here.  But here is a link to it

I can't say that I am not totally positive of everything but.... I will admit this year since I have been using grass as mulch, the garden seems to be alot "happier"

Harvest Time

It may not be much but there was a little harvest here at Chestnut Hill Farms (ha!). The lettuce has been growing well and I love seeing it getting bigger and bigger.

Here is what they were at the beginning in March.
March 27th
And here is what they looked like this week.
Bigger and Bigger
While I only cut off a few of the leaves, it was so sweet to have "grown my own" food.

Little Update

I have been reading about brussel sprouts and it seems that fall is the way to go. Our weather here get too hot too fast. I am still going to try.
While reading, I read that some people cut off the leaves to make the sprouts grow.  I have decided to try and see what happens.

I took 2 of the plants and clipped their bottom leaves and will see what happens.
hope this works

As if you wondered

If anyone wonders why this blog is called Goofy Gardening, show them these pictures.
Crazy chard
Everyone said I put things out too early but in my opnion if I bought a plant...I needed to put it in the ground. Anyhoo... Tonight, they have a forcast for frost. So I ran out and covered everything in grass clippings and some of the material they but down in the "flower bed" out front. Fortunately, the lawnman came today so I had plenty to put out.
Do you see the rose bush?
Please note that I did this after work and a trip to the tax agency.  So I was raking grass and placing it without much light at all. As you can see, I overdid it.
Thyme for a change :-)

I felt guilty because I planted to early. I didn't want anything to die because I was too stupid.  Now, they will die because I was too stupid to mulch the correct amount.

Hope you are having a great week and are a little saner than me.

New additions

We have had alot of rain lately, so my seedlings have sprouted.  I feel like I am late in planting these but I am always amazed at what Mother Nature can do.

Kohlrabi is planted. Now, what is it?
It is amazing to think that you put this little bitty seed, that you can barely see, add water and some fertilizer, and it comes something you can eat.
Carrots for Easter
I am learning that things do get better over time.  If only I can have the patience until May?

Finally Finished

Well I have finished most of the deck. I just have to paint the back of the posts.  I am so excited and can't wait to have a cookout.
Love the swiss chard and basket in the corner
The rug is called Mad Mats and I bought it from our local Gracious Designs store. Mine is the Clover pattern that they had in the store.

Love the "grill" on the table. HA
I adore these deck planters that I purchased several years ago at our Evergreen JC store. You just need to make sure you buy the correct width for your deck rails. I made the mistake of not measuring and had to take several back.
Can't wait to show you some more pictures from the garden next time.

Living on the edge

Bottom and side of my garden
I am trying something new with my garden. Every year I hate having to dig out the outline of the plot.  I was reading another blog and they talked about using cardboard to cut weeds.  What I have done is to dig out the garden dirt and then place down a layer of cardboard.  I then refill the area with the dirt, after I have taken out the weeds and rocks.  Finally, I place the ceramic tile pieces on top.  I am hoping that this will keep the weeds at bay.
Anyone have any information about this?

Making a pie from scratch

Today I finally was able to plant my blueberry bush.  Actually right now it is just a stick but hopefully with time and patience, I will have blueberries to much on this summer.
Bare root blueberry plant

Hopefully there will be blooms in a few weeks.
It just looks so sad right now.  Just planted a couple of twigs in the ground
