Inch by Inch

Well, I just wanted to show that not all the veggies are in the garden.
First up- seeds and seedling are begining to sprout.
Pepper, collards, mustard, carrots,etc
Leeks, kale, broccoli, lettuce, etc
Next, are the veggies in containers. Of course the ones, someone else planted are doing WAY better than mine.
Swiss chard - Yum

Onions
Finally, the herbs in the planters
Cilantro and mint

Parsley and oregano

Fixin' Friday

I don't know if this officially counts as "gardening" but I am redoing my deck.
As you can see, it has been awhile since it has been painted. Unfortunatly, I don't think the railings have EVER been painted.
I went to Lowe's and bought some solid color stain to restain the deck. I really liked the green color. I know it is hard to tell that is what it was. The stain I chose was Olympic Maximum in Woodland Green. I decided that it would match my "woodlands." BONUS- all the materials I bought, from the paint to the brushes and roller were made in America. WooHoo!

Hopefully I will have great looking pictures when it is finished.

Burn Baby Burn

I was reading Pioneer Woman blog this morning and she talked of burning the fields for winter wheat.  This reminded me of when my dearest friends/family burned my garden.  It really did help with weeds and I think helped the soil.  We did it in the fall, but everyone else suggested that you do it in the spring.  I will have  to try it, maybe do a little research first, next year.

Yep, anything that will help with the weeds :-)

Mulch madness

I have been excited about growing some brussel sprouts because I love eating them and I think it is cool to watch them "sprout". However, they are a cool weather crop. I planted them on March 10th, hoping that was early enough.  The past couple of weeks it has gotten pretty hot and I worry about them. ( Is that normal to worry about plants?) Yesterday, I decided that since the "lawnman" came and mowed, I could use the grass clippings as mulch around the plants to keep them cool. Is this a good idea? Harmful?  Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Brussel sprouts are under there somewhere
Ok, this is just because I think she is adorable.  Erin is my "baby"of 6 years and adorable. My friend and I have nicknamed her Erni because that is how the clerk at Lowes spelled her name :-)

It begins

Well, I have decided to create a blog about my garden. Mainly so I can keep up with all the changes.  It is hard to see small changes over the season. I have taken pictures before but I forget what year or month things were taken.
This is the semi-beginnings of this years garden. I hate to admit it but I have done alot of work to get it in this shape.  Everytime I go to the garden I sing "Inch by Inch" by Peter Paul and Mary.  That is how my garden is this year. I am only in small patches at a time because that is all I can handle.
March 27,2012  At least you can see the lettuce
